Radiant barriers are becoming more and more popular each year in new construction as well as in homes being retrofitted for energy efficiency, especially in hot climates. Radiant barriers, essentially sheets of reinforced aluminum foil, have been shown to block thermal radiation effectively. In the right applications, radiant-insulation systems make a lot of sense, but they are rarely good substitutes for conventional insulation.
Radiant barriers can be installed both in walls (vertical position) and in a roof’s attic (horizontal or inclined position). A radiant barrier by itself provides no thermal resistance; it must be installed in conjunction with an air space. When a radiant barrier is placed on the attic floor, much of the heat radiated from the hot roof is reflected back toward the roof. A radiant barrier cuts air conditioning costs by blocking most of the heat flow that radiates from the rood downward into the attic insulation. Internet can be a good place to find various radiant barriers for your home.
